Site Description: Raccoon Island is a high marsh island located in a remote
area of Pamlico Sound.
Habitats: saltmarsh, high brackish marsh
Land Use: wildlife conservation
Primary Threats: no major threats, disturbance to birds is a minor threat
Protection Status: The site is not currently afforded protection.
Conservation Issues: The island is remote not easily accessible.
Nevertheless, human disturbance during the nesting season is a minor concern.
Birds: Raccoon has supported a variety of nesting colonial waterbirds for
many years. The site presently supports the state's largest colony of Forster's
Terns and the state's largest colony of Glossy Ibises. Eight species of colonial
waterbirds and approximately 4470 nesting pairs were present in 1999.
