Palmetto-Peartree Preserve

Site Description: Palmetto-Peartree Preserve is located in Tyrell County, on the edge of Albemarle Sound and the Little Alligator River. The Preserve contains approximately 2600 acres of non-riverine swamp forest, along with stands of Atlantic White Cedar and brackish marsh. Eighteen clusters of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers have been located. The site also supports a diversity of landbirds and waterfowl.

Land Use: wildlife conservation, recreation/tourism, forestry, hunting

Primary Threats: potential threats include disturbance to birds.

Protection Status: The NC Department of Transportation purchased the site as mitigation for red-cockaded woodpeckers. It is protected and managed by The Conservation Fund.
