Old DOT Island

Location:
Dare County           Total Size: __ acres

Site Description: Old DOT Island (Department of Transportation) is an undiked dredged material island located in Pamlico Sound, near Hatteras Village. The site was created with dredged sand from the nearby Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry channel.

Habitats:  bare sand, moderate - dense grasses/herbs

Land Use: wildlife conservation

Primary Threats: disturbance to birds

Protection Status: The site is protected and managed by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.

Conservation Issues: The island is posted and patrolled, but human disturbances during the nesting season is a serious concern.  This island has eroded significantly in recent years.  Very little early-succession habitat remains.  The site should be maintained or an alternate site should be developed.

Birds: Old DOT Island has supported a mixed-species colony of wading birds and seabirds for many years. Eight species of wading birds and 4 species of gulls and terns nest on the site.  Royal and Sandwich terns have nested on the site in some years.
