New Stump Point

Site Description:
New Stump Point is a peninsula located of a large expanse of marsh located
in southern Pamlico Sound. The site is primarily saltmarsh with areas of
sandy beach. The availability of sandy beach habitat generally determines
the number of terns and skimmers on the island. When open bare-sparsley
vegetated sandy habitat is not present, species such as Black Skimmers and
Gull-billed Terns generally do not nest on the site. Forster's Terns are
present most years and utilize wrack scattered throughout the marsh.

Protection Status: The site is not protected and managed and ownership is uncertain. However, the remote location of this island presents few problems with human disturbances.

Birds: New Stump Point supports 4 species of nesting terns and skimmers. The site is important for nesting Forster's Terns.
