Old House Channel, Island L

Total Size: 40 acres
Site Description: Island L is an undiked dredged material island located
in northeastern Pamlico Sound. The island consists of two or more high domes of
dredged sand, grassland and a fringe of shrubs.
Habitats: shrub/scrub, bare sand, grassland
Land Use: wildlife conservation
Primary Threats: disturbance to birds
Protection Status: The site is protected and managed by the NC Wildlife
Resources Commission.
Conservation Issues: The island is posted and patrolled, but human
disturbances during the nesting season is a serious concern.
Birds: The site is a key nesting site for Brown Pelicans and other colonial seabirds. The site supports more than 500 nesting colonial waterbirds each season (criteria 4f). Royal and Sandwich terns have been banded on this site for more than a decade (criteria 5).
